It's a classic lesbian stereotype: the flannel shirt. But for one couple, that stereotype became a reality when they discovered that they had accidentally purchased the same exact set of flannel shirts.
Sara and Emily had been dating for about six months when they decided to take a weekend trip upstate to enjoy some fresh air and nature. As they packed their bags, they both reached for their favorite flannel shirts - a blue and green plaid one for Sara and a red and black one for Emily. Little did they know that they were both bringing the same exact shirts.
It wasn't until they arrived at their cabin and started unpacking that they realized what had happened. "We just kind of stared at each other for a minute," Emily recalled. "And then we both burst out laughing."
From that moment on, the flannel shirts became a running joke between them. They would purposely wear them at the same time, pretending to be twins, or try to switch them up to see if the other noticed. "It was just a silly little thing, but it brought us closer together," Sara said.
As the months went on, they started to notice more and more similarities between them. They both loved hiking, had the same favorite coffee shop, and even owned the same exact pair of hiking boots. "It was like we were meant to be together," Emily said with a smile.
Their friends and family couldn't help but tease them about their matching flannels. "It was like we had become a lesbian cliche," Sara joked. But despite the teasing, they both loved their flannels and wore them proudly.
In fact, they loved them so much that they decided to wear them to their first pride parade together. "We got so many compliments on them," Emily said. "People were taking pictures with us and everything. It was like we were celebrities."
Now, years later, Sara and Emily are still happily together and still wearing their flannels. They've even started a tradition of buying each other a new flannel shirt every year for their anniversary.
"It's just a little thing, but it means a lot to us," Sara said. "It's like a symbol of our love and our connection to each other."
So if you ever see two women wearing matching flannel shirts and holding hands, just know that they might be more in love than you could ever imagine.
